About OTHM

OTHM provides a programme of professional qualifications that are designed for Student Members to develop progressively the skills and knowledge that they will need to help them in their careers.

OTHM supports and encourages initiatives that help to minimise the impact of tourism on the environment and culture of host destinations.

OTHM Pathway



OTHM has a key relationship with London South Bank University allowing holders of the OTHM Higher Diploma to have direct entry to the final year of London South Bank University's Bachelor's degree programme.

Students who have successfully completed the OTHM Higher Diploma and who have two year's management experience in the tourism and hospitality industry are eligible to apply for entry to London South Bank University's MSc programme.

OTHM is currently negotiating with further UK universities for Student Members to be able to join their Bachelor's and Master's degree courses with a suitable OTHM qualification and experience.

Qualifications

OTHM courses enable students to develop the skills that are essential to their progress within the industry:
   — Understanding of the operations, structure and culture
       of the industry
   — Understanding of contemporary issues in the industry
   — Information technology skills
   — Customer relations skills

IntroCert

Qualification: Introductory Certificate - OTHM

Who is this suitable for?

The OTHM Introductory Certificate is suitable for Student Members who are at the beginning of their careers. Candidates do not necessarily have to have experience of working in the industry at the outset of the course but, if they do not have this experience, students are expected to be working in the industry on a part-time basis during the course. The Introductory Certificate course allows candidates to acquire useful basic knowledge as a preparation for a career in the industry.

You must be 18 years or older at the beginning of the course.

Marks allocated:

60% Project, 30% On-line examination, 10% Attendance

Project

The project will cover a practical working situation in travel, tourism or hospitality. Students are expected to undertake some research and to draw on their current work experience.
Your training centre will assist you in choosing and defining your topic so that it covers areas of the OTHM Introductory Certificate syllabus.

Assessment of the Introductory Certificate Project.

On-Line Exam

30 questions multiple choice to be completed in 1 hour at an OTHM Approved On-Line Examination Centre

Pass Mark

Candidates should attain at least 50% in both the Project and On-Line Examination to gain the Introductory Certificate Grades will be allocated according to the OTHM grade table.

Progression

On passing the OTHM Introductory Certificate Members will be eligible to be considered for OTHM Certificate course.

Certificate

Qualification: Certificate - OTHM

Who is this suitable for?

The OTHM Certificate is suitable for students who have already gained an OTHM Introductory Certificate or who have qualifications at the level of GCE/GCSE or equivalent. It is also suitable for mature students with at least 5 years relevant experience.
This qualification will help team leaders and supervisors and those who want to rise to the first tier of management.

Entry requirements:
— Holders of OTHM Introductory Certificate or
— 5 GCSE's or 5 O'Levels or equivalent or
— Equivalent academic qualifications or
— Mature students with at least 5 year's relevant experience
+ English Language Competency (IELTS 6.0)
Work Experience

Although it is desirable that Certificate students have some experience in the industry, no minimum is required.

The OTHM Certificate consists of 4 modules:
1. Introduction to Travel, Tourism and Hospitality
2. Introduction to the Business Environment
3. Introduction to Business Communication and Customer Care
4. Introduction to Business and Finance
Each module requires 45 hours of classroom teaching.

Assessment

Each module is assessed by a three hour written examination.

Progression

On passing the OTHM Certificate Members will be eligible to be considered for OTHM Diploma course.

Diploma

Qualification: OTHM Diploma

Who is this suitable for?

The OTHM Diploma is suitable for people who have passed the OTHM Certificate (or equivalent) or who are already working at supervisory or management level.

Entry requirements:
— Holders of OTHM Certificate or
— Equivalent academic qualifications or
— Mature students with a minimum of 8 year's relevant
    experience including 3 year's management experience
+ English Language Competency (IELTS 6.0)
Work Experience

Diploma students are expected to either have work experience in the industry before joining the course or be working part-time in the industry during the course or both. Candidates should note that if they intend to study for further professional qualifications in the industry a certain amount of industrial experience will probably be required.

Higher Diploma

Qualification: OTHM Higher Diploma

Who is this suitable for?

The OTHM Higher Diploma is suitable for people who work in the Tourism and Hospitality Industry and who have already gained an OTHM Diploma, or other qualifications at a suitable level.

This qualification is appropriate for middle and senior managers.

On completion of the OTHM Higher Diploma, you can also be put forward for election as a Full Member of OTHM.

Entry requirements:
— Holders of OTHM Diploma or equivalent or
— 1st Degree or HND/HNC or equivalent
+ English Language Competency (IELTS 6.0)
Work Experience

Higher Diploma students are expected to either have work experience in the industry before joining the course or be working part-time in the industry during the course or both. Candidates should note that if they intend to study for further professional qualifications in the industry a certain amount of industrial experience will probably be required.

Part II

6. Project: Operations Management in the Business Environment
Each module requires 45 hours of classroom teaching.

Assessment

Each of modules 1 to 5 is assessed by a three hour written examination.

Module 6 is assessed by a project.

Progression

On passing the OTHM Higher Diploma Members will be eligible to be considered for various courses in recognised colleges and universities in the UK and around the world.

Individual Certificates

OTHM Individual Certificate

OTHM is pleased to announce the launch of six new 'Management Certificates'

They can be examined from June 2007. Each module should be taught over 30 GLH (Guided Learning Hours) and is available in edition to the established OTHM Introductory Certificate and Professional Certificate, Diploma and Higher Diploma.

Target Groups:
— Existing OTHM students at your centre
— Other Business studies students who wish to take one or more
    of the six certificates
— Individuals currently working in the Tourism and Hospitality
    Supply Chain
— CPD Training for OTHM members
Eligibility:

All candidates need to be registered with OTHM either as a student [fee 60] or be a current OTHM Practitioner, Associate or Full Member.
Existing OTHM students must be on Professional Certificate, Diploma or Higher Diploma level.
OTHM students on Introductory must first pass their Introductory Certificate to apply for examination entry for the new 'Management Certificate'

Exam fee:

The examination fee for each individual certificate is 60.

Academic level:

The Aim, Objectives and Learning outcomes are positioned at a similar level as the OTHM Professional Certificate. However these are specialist 'Operational Areas' that will require some additional commitment and reading from students and other candidates.

— The OTHM Food & Beverage Management Certificate
— The OTHM Front Office Management Certificate
— The OTHM Sustaining Tourism & Eco management Certificate

Paid Internship

Professional development being their primary aim students need to be guided by established and experienced institutions and professionals. Paid internship during the period of studies is one of the effective means of achieving that goal.

The wealth of expertise at LSBC often helps students obtain their paid internships which stand in their good stead in securing places at universities in the United Kingdom or abroad. At present LSBC is widely placing Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Management Students with paid internship. You have to be Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Higher Diploma student in Travel, Tourism & Hospitality programme at LSBC.

Entry Requirements

To gain an OTHM qualification you must have studied an OTHM authorised course it an officially listed OTHM study centre.
There are four levels of qualification open to OTHM Student Members


Qualification Entry Requirements

Introductory Certificate

  • Individuals who wish to commence or have commenced work in the tourism and hospitality industry
    + English language competency of IELTS 6.0

    NB: If concurrent English language tuition is offered it is recommended that students have IELTS 5.0 at the beginning of the course and IELTS 6.0 by the completion of the course.

Certificate

  • Holders of OTHM Introductory Certificate or
  • 5 GCSE's or 5 O'Levels or equivalent or
  • Equivalent academic qualifications or
  • Mature students with at least 5 year's relevant experience
    + English Language Competency (IELTS 6.0)

Diploma

  • Holders of OTHM Certificate or
  • Equivalent academic qualifications or
  • Mature students with a minimum of 8 year's relevant experience including 3 year's management experience
    + English Language Competency (IELTS 6.0)
* Holders of OTHM Diploma can apply for Associate Member status

Higher Diploma

* Holders of OTHM Higher Diploma can apply for Member status
Individual Certificates
